West Midlands MPs given new shadow cabinet roles
West Midlands MPs Shabana Mahmood and Pat McFadden have been handed key roles in Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer's new-look shadow cabinet.
Starmer announced the reshuffle yesterday, with Birmingham Ladywood MP Ms Mahmood being appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Justice.
She said: “I am honoured to be appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Justice.
“As a former barrister, I know the challenges our justice system is facing - after 13 years of the Conservatives, it is on its knees. I am looking forward to getting stuck in. Labour is the party of law and order.”
Meanwhile, McFadden, the MP for Wolverhampton South East, was handed the pivotal role of being national campaign co-ordinator ahead of next year's General Election.
The former shadow Treasury chief secretary, who has represented his constituency since 2005, has also been appointed shadow chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, which is the second highest ranking member of the cabinet.
He said: "I am very pleased with the position of national election co-ordinator. I look forward to working with my different Labour colleagues from across the country in the role."
Preet Gill, the MP for Birmingham Edgbaston, has been replaced by Lisa Nandy as shadow cabinet minister for international development.
