Why Inclusion Matters: National Inclusion Week for Young Professionals
Written by the Future Faces committee
Every September, National Inclusion Week reminds us why inclusion is crucial in the workplace. This year's theme, "Impact Matters", focuses on measuring the progress we’re making toward creating inclusive environments. It's a chance for everyone, especially young professionals and leaders, to reflect on how we can better support each other.
The Facts on Inclusion
Did you know 80 per cent of disabilities are hidden? Around 14.6 million people in the UK report having a disability, most of which are invisible. But inclusion goes beyond disabilities—it’s about making sure everyone’s needs are met so they can be their best selves, both in and out of work.
Why It Matters for Business
Inclusion drives business success. Here’s why:
- Bigger Talent Pool: A diverse workforce attracts talent from all backgrounds, fueling creativity and innovation.
- New Perspectives: Different experiences lead to fresh approaches and better problem-solving.
- Boosted Productivity: When people feel included and supported, they bring their best to work.
Wellbeing and Inclusion
Inclusion is deeply tied to wellbeing. When employees feel valued, their mental and emotional health improves. A culture that supports inclusion reduces stress, anxiety, and burnout, while also promoting a better work-life balance. A happy, healthy workforce leads to greater engagement, creativity, and loyalty.
Don’t Forget Social Mobility
Inclusion also means addressing social mobility—ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has a fair chance to progress. Whether it’s offering mentorship, apprenticeships, or removing socioeconomic barriers, promoting social mobility brings fresh perspectives into the workplace and supports career growth for all.
What Can You Do?
- Open the Conversation: Ask how you can support colleagues and foster inclusion in your organization.
- Promote Social Mobility: Ensure that opportunities are available to people from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Track Your Progress: Record your inclusion journey to measure the real impact and make lasting changes.
National Inclusion Week is the perfect time to start these conversations and make meaningful strides. By supporting inclusion and social mobility, we create a workplace where everyone can thrive.
