YMCA Burton is bidding farewell to one of their longest serving board members, Jill Lanham.

Jill will have served 32 years as a trustee and as the chair of the board on two occasions and has led the charity through some major developments in that time which included new housing site acquirements and opening four retail stores.

Throughout her time as a volunteer, Jill became the mentor for new trustees joining the charity offering her expertise, support and knowledge. She is passionate about good governance, complying with Charity Commission legislation and ensuring that all Trustees fulfil their roles and responsibilities.

CEO of Burton YMCA Paul Laffey said: “We have been so blessed to have had Jill serving as a trustee with us for so long. Jill has led the way in protecting our ethos, values and mission.

"Jill was also on the board when I was interviewed for my first post at YMCA Burton. Some of my personal highlights, such as visiting Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament and Lambeth Palace have been with Jill.

"I want to thank Jill, for everything she has done for us, we will all miss her very much and wish her a very happy retirement. ”

Jill said: “It seems a long time ago when I was first invited to observe a Board Meeting with a view to becoming a Trustee back in 1989 and I was 38 with a young family of 3 daughters.

"Little did I realise that I would stay for nearly 32 years but I look back with gratitude at the positive effect it has had on me, John my husband and also my family.

"During my journey with the YMCA I have seen how hard it can be living a fulfilled life if you have had a disadvantaged upbringing. You need significant help and encouragement and that is what we all at the YMCA work together to give.

"For those out there thinking about working or volunteering for the YMCA I say to you 'Don 't be afraid about getting involved '. The YMCA Burton family will support you in your journey. Looking back, I feel I have gained more than I have ever given and I will miss you all greatly when I step down in June. ”
