Youth programme in Solihull helps young people explore careers through work placements
A programme in Solihull is helping young people who are out of work to gain hands-on experience and explore different careers.
Solihull Council’s Youth Trailblazer programme supports young people aged 18-21 in gaining hands-on experience and exploring careers through work placements.
Two students, Jessie and Harry have explored 12 different animal-related career paths from pet sitting to veterinary through a three-week placement with the Snooty Pooch CIC a community organisation that improves local mental health and wellbeing through therapy dog services and community events.
After experiencing setbacks and time out of work, the two students joined the programme and the placement opened their eyes to the variety of opportunities in the industry while equipping them with important life skills, including travelling independently.
Last week, they completed their placement with a dog-grooming taster session, giving therapy dogs including Rufus (pictured) a well-deserved pampering. Alice Cassel, owner of the Pet Palace in Shard End offered this taster session with her team.
Harry said: “I didn’t want anything to do with schools or colleges. I was looking for a job but hadn’t been successful. I love dogs, so I was thrilled to learn about this opportunity with Snooty Pooch.
“I’ve never had so much fun at work. I’ve learnt how to train and handle dogs, as well as all the many different roles involved in working with animals.”
