Preliminary strengthening works on Burton Bridge will start in May ahead of a major improvement scheme planned for later in the summer. The work is part of a £6.1million refurbishment project to safeguard the future use of both St. Peter’s Bridge and Burton Bridge. Most of the work is being carried out from beneath the bridge and will not affect traffic using it. However the footway/cycleway that runs under the first span of the bridge will be diverted during the works. This phase of the scheme will start on Tuesday May 8 and is expected to take around 12 weeks to complete. Resurfacing and upgrading of gullies will start in June. The works on Burton Bridge planned for later in the summer follow extensive refurbishments on St Peter’s Bridge last year which were completed in the autumn ahead of schedule. The funding for the project is part of the multi-million pound Highway Challenge Fund from the Department for Transport.
