Burton bids to become UK Town of Culture
Burton upon Trent is bidding to make its mark on the national cultural stage, entering the new UK Town of Culture competition with a powerful story of brewing heritage, creative energy, and community spirit.
Inspired by the success of the UK City of Culture, the UK Town of Culture competition recognises towns for their cultural achievements, community engagement, and local identity.
One successful town will be named UK Town of Culture 2028 and awarded £3 million to deliver a year-long programme of cultural activity, while two runners-up will each receive £250,000 to bring their boldest cultural ideas to life.
From historic landmarks and grassroots community initiatives to vibrant town centre events and emerging creative talent, Burton’s growing cultural offer aims to celebrate people, place and progress.
Building on this collaborative ethos, East Staffordshire Borough Council is partnering with local businesses, community groups and organisations across the town to shape a bid which truly represents what makes Burton upon Trent special.
The Town of Culture entry will also reflect the town’s bold approach to regeneration, where heritage, creativity, and community come together, preserving, and reimagining spaces for communities and future generations, leaving a lasting cultural legacy.
Cllr Paul Walker, cabinet member for tourism and cultural development, said: "This entry is about the Council working in partnership with local people to celebrate Burton and everything that makes our town special.
“The bid will build upon the incredible work already happening, from our enhanced Washlands, to the ongoing success of the Sonic Boom Festival and the revitalisation of historic sites as part of the Old Brewery Quarter regeneration.
“Culture is at the heart of our community, and this is our chance to share that story with the rest of the country."
The Council is inviting local organisations to share their ideas and help shape Burton upon Trent’s entry. To get involved, contact [email protected].
