The training arm of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) has launched a new course that prioritises mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.

The one-day Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) champions training course empowers professionals to recognise early warning signs, respond with empathy, and foster a psychologically safe environment.

Participants will gain practical tools to support colleagues, clients, and themselves with care and confidence.

Delivered in a safe, supportive setting by expert trainers from GBCC members The Kaleidoscope Plus Group, the session is designed for anyone who wants to better navigate sensitive conversations and promote mental wellness in the workplace.

Faye Brecknock, Lead Mental Health First Aid Instructor & Head of Operations at Kaleidoscope Plus Group said: "Investing in Mental Health First Aid training goes beyond supporting individuals – it strengthens your entire organisation.

“By equipping people with the skills to recognise the signs, start supportive conversations, and offer help, you’ll see a real shift in workplace culture: one where people genuinely care for each other, resilience grows, and productivity improves.

“And the benefits don’t stop at work. When wellbeing is truly valued, it has a positive ripple effect on home life and personal relationships too.

“After nearly a decade of delivering this course across a wide range of workplaces and communities, participants consistently tell me that learning how to have meaningful conversations about mental health has reduced stress both at home and in the workplace.

“It also helps break down stigma, so people feel able to talk openly about their mental health without fear of shame or embarrassment."

After the course, MHFA champions should be able to:

  • Recognise the main signs and symptoms of mental ill health
  • Provide initial help
  • Guide people towards appropriate professional help
  • Develop an understanding of how to help build a mentally healthy workplace, challenge stigma and support positive wellbeing
  • Manage their own wellbeing

On completion, all attendees will receive a certificate of attendance to say they are an MHFA champion, a training manual to refer to whenever they need it, quick reference card for the Mental Health First Aid action plan, and a workbook including a helpful toolkit to support their own mental health.
