A sport student at Burton and South Derbyshire College has achieved national success in cross-country running after winning a silver medal at the AoC National Championships.

The accolade was achieved Seren Abbott, a Level 3 sports student at BSDC.

Representing both the college and the Midlands region, Seren competed against approximately 50 student athletes in a 5km cross-country race.

Delivering an outstanding performance, she secured second place overall in her category and took home a silver medal.

The AoC Sport National Championships is widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading college sporting events, celebrating both athletic performance and teamwork among students from across the country.

The prestigious championships bring together some of the country’s most talented college athletes, with students qualifying through a series of regional competitions organised throughout the academic year by AoC Sport.

Reflecting on her achievement, Seren said: “The fact I entered this competition quite late and still came second is a huge shock. I’m really proud of myself and so happy to have won a silver medal.”

Students from Burton and South Derbyshire College took part in the regional tournaments earlier this year, with Seren’s success marking a significant achievement for the college’s sport programme.

This year’s event featured 13 sports, including badminton, indoor cricket, 7-a-side football and volleyball, attracting competitors from colleges across the UK.

Kate Anslow, sport and public services course leader at Burton and South Derbyshire College, said: “Seren did an incredible job representing the college and demonstrating professionalism throughout the competition.

“Seeing Seren and the girls from the Midlands region getting recognised for their efforts was a wonderful moment to be part of.”

Following the completion of her course, Seren plans to continue her sporting journey through a football scholarship in America, where she hopes to further develop her career in sport while continuing to compete at a high level.
