Warning issued as heatwave leads to spike in legionella samples
Legionella and fire safety experts have issued a warning to UK holidaymakers and property owners as temperatures continue to soar.
With the UK experiencing temperatures to rival the Mediterranean, Legionella & Fire Safe Services are reminding not only holidaymakers travelling abroad but also homeowners, businesses, and holiday rental operators in the UK to stay vigilant when it comes to legionella and fire safety this summer.
Steve Morris, managing director of Lichfield-based Legionella & Fire Safe Services, says the heat is perfect breeding ground for bacteria in unused or poorly maintained water systems – including garden hosepipes and holiday cottage showers.
Steve, who has over 35 years’ experience in legionella compliance, said: “It’s easy to think Legionella is just a risk for hotels overseas, but the reality is that warm, stagnant water systems here at home can pose just as big a risk - especially during heatwaves like the one we’re experiencing now.”
“The heat creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria in any unused or poorly maintained water system, from your garden hosepipe to a holiday cottage shower.
“In fact, we’ve seen a significant rise in positive Legionella samples from routine water testing over the last few weeks.
“This isn’t just a theoretical risk - the evidence is clear that the bacteria are out there and thriving in the current warm conditions. That’s why awareness and simple preventative action are absolutely vital.”
Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially fatal type of pneumonia caused by inhaling tiny water droplets containing legionella bacteria.
It can be caught from showers, taps, hot tubs, air conditioning units, and even hose pipes left sitting in the sun with stagnant water inside.
Common symptoms include high temperature, fever or chills, coughing, muscle pains, headaches and confusion.
Steve added: “It’s vital to take this seriously. Legionnaires’ disease will not go away on its own - it requires urgent medical treatment and can be life-threatening, particularly for the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, smokers and anyone with existing health issues.
“With so many people enjoying staycations and holiday lets this summer, awareness is more important than ever.”
Legionella bacteria thrive in warm, unused water systems, which is why summer can bring added risk if water outlets or properties are left empty or underused.
On advice for homeowners, Steve says: “If you’re heading away, don’t come home to a hidden danger. Run all taps and showers for several minutes when you return and make sure your hot water cylinders are kept at 60°C or above — it’s a simple step that can protect you and your family.
“And don’t forget your garden hosepipe - if it’s been lying in the sun, flush it through fully before spraying anyone down or filling a paddling pool.”
For businesses, he advises: “For businesses, especially offices, schools, gyms and leisure centres, summer can mean parts of your building are underused. This can create the perfect environment for Legionella to multiply.
“Take time now to review your water safety plan, flush little-used outlets regularly and maintain your hot and cold water temperatures within safe limits.”
Finally, Steve advises holiday rental owners: “If you own a holiday rental, you have a legal duty of care to manage Legionella risks.
“Between guest bookings, it’s vital to run taps and showers to prevent water from stagnating.
“A simple flush-through can make a real difference to your guests’ safety.”
