A female apprentice plumber at social housing group Trent & Dove scooped a prestige award -thanks to her “dedication, professionalism and resilience” in an often male-dominated field.

Called a strong ambassador for adult education and the profession, Ruth Binks, 52, was awarded Adult Learner of the Year at Burton and South Derbyshire College’s Further Education and Apprenticeship Awards.

The award cements Trent & Dove’s position as an inclusive employer and its commitment to apprenticeships and work experience placements, which are key to its ongoing success.

Ruth is a vital part of Trent & Dove, spending four days a week with the social housing organisation based in Staffordshire and one day at college, where she is gaining her plumbing and heating technician level 3 qualification.

After switching from a childcare career, Ruth wanted to develop a skill within the trade industry.

She has certainly made a splash, with her award nominee stating: “Ruth demonstrates outstanding dedication, professionalism and resilience as an adult learner.

“She consistently shows a strong work ethic, a mature approach to learning and a genuine passion for developing both technical and professional skills.”

Her enthusiasm to learn new techniques, embrace emerging technologies and understand modern industry practices was also highlighted.

On her win, Ruth said: “It was an honour to be among such strong and inspiring candidates. I have always felt supported, encouraged and valued at Trent & Dove, and learning on the job has given me the experience and confidence I need to progress in my chosen career.

“I hope my experience inspires others to consider an apprenticeship, whatever stage of life they are at. Apprenticeships provide a fantastic opportunity to gain new skills, achieve recognised qualifications and build confidence in a chosen career.

“I’m proud to show that it’s never too late to learn something new and that apprenticeships are for people of all ages.”

Trent & Dove CEO Ursula Bennion said: “We are incredibly proud of Ruth and this well-deserved recognition. Her determination to embrace a new career, continue learning and excel in a skilled trade is truly inspiring.

“Ruth embodies the values we champion at Trent & Dove - commitment, inclusion, personal growth and creating opportunities for everyone to succeed, regardless of their background or stage in life.

“We believe our colleagues are our greatest strength, and we are committed to providing an environment where people feel supported to reach their potential.

“Ruth’s achievement is a fantastic example of what can be accomplished when talent, hard work and opportunity come together, and we hope her story encourages others to pursue their ambitions with confidence.”

On the night, Ruth was joined by Trent & Dove operations director Martyn Hale, who presented the Award for Workplace Success to Mohammed Kayani.

Trent & Dove Independent Living New Services Manager Samantha Yates was also invited to attend following its close relationship with the College.

In 2025, Trent & Dove invited students from the College’s Stephen Burke Construction Academy to visit its £20.8 million Tyldesley Court project, allowing them to gain essential first-hand experience at an active building site as work continued on the creation of 72 apartments for the over-55s and 10 family homes.
