The Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) has outlined the importance of business to local economies in a letter to candidates standing in upcoming elections.

The letter encourages early and ongoing dialogue with the business community both before and after polling day.

Local elections, happening on Thursday, 7 May, play a vital role in shaping the economic environment in which firms operate, with councils responsible for a wide range of decisions that impact workplaces, high streets and local communities.

From planning and infrastructure to skills, regeneration and public services, the outcome of next week’s vote will help determine how successfully local areas can support growth in the years ahead.

The Chamber has been advocating on behalf of companies of all sizes across Greater Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.

The engagement reflects the Chamber’s long-standing role as the voice of business, bringing insight from firms operating on the ground into conversations with key decision-makers.

By setting out the challenges and opportunities businesses face locally, GBCC aims to help ensure that economic considerations remain central to council priorities following the elections.

GBCC deputy CEO Raj Kandola (pictured) said: “Every councillor represents local businesses and jobs within their ward. At a time of economic uncertainty, it’s more important than ever that those seeking election understand the role businesses play in sustaining communities and driving prosperity.”

The Chamber’s work with candidates forms part of a broader approach to advocacy that combines regular engagement with businesses via events and committees, research-led insight and constructive collaboration with political leaders at all levels.

Following the elections, the GBCC plans to continue working with newly elected councillors to support strong local leadership and inclusive economic growth across the region.

Businesses across Greater Birmingham are encouraged to stay engaged with the democratic process and to continue sharing their experiences and priorities with the Chamber as it represents their interests.
