East Staffordshire Borough Council is consulting on a proposal to introduce selective licensing to 16 streets in the borough.

The consultation is live and will run to 3 April.

Tenants, residents, landlords, letting agents or businesses, living or operating in one of the proposed areas could be affected by the proposal.

The proposal includes the following streets which have been identified as areas with a high percentage of private rented properties and concentrations of poor property conditions:

•             Anglesey Road

•             Belvedere Road

•             Byrkley Street

•             Calais Road

•             Derby Street

•             Edward Street

•             High Street

•             Horninglow Road North

•             Horninglow Road

•             Oak Street

•             Princess Street

•             Shobnall Road

•             Thornley Street

•             Victoria Crescent

•             Wetmore Road

•             Wyggeston Street

The Council believes that the scheme will bring widespread benefits to the local community to address poor housing standards ensuring that tenants are living in safe, well-maintained and compliant homes.

If a selective licensing designation is approved all Landlords that provide private rented accommodation within these areas will need to apply for a licence from the Council.

This ensures that landlords are managing their tenants and properties to a satisfactory standard, raising housing conditions for tenants and reducing deprivation.

It is proposed that the designation will start in October 2026 and last for 5 years.

Councillor Simon Slater (pictured), Cabinet Member for Communities and Regulatory Services said “We are keen to hear the views of local people on this scheme which we think will improve housing standards for East Staffordshire residents to ensure homes are fit to live in.”
