Council set to handout free trees for East Staffordshire residents
East Staffordshire Borough Council is supporting a free tree giveaway event where local residents can collect native trees to plant in their gardens or community spaces.
The event, organised by the Staffordshire Sustainability Board and will take place on Monday 16 February at The Greenhouse, Stapenhill Cemetery, from 10 am to 2 pm.
A total of 500 trees will be available for residents to collect. Choose from a selection of native species, including hawthorn, rowan, silver birch, crab apple and whitebeam.
All trees are between 30 - 60cm tall, making them easy to transport and ideal for planting in domestic gardens.
The trees are free and will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.
Councillor Dennis Fletcher, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change at East Staffordshire Borough Council, said: "This is a great opportunity for residents to do their bit for the environment.
“Planting trees not only supports local wildlife and makes our neighbourhoods greener and more pleasant places to live, but it also helps tackle climate change by capturing carbon.
“We're pleased to be working with the Staffordshire Sustainability Board on this initiative. Whether you have a large garden or a small outdoor space, there's a tree species suitable for you."
The event is part of a wider programme of tree giveaways taking place across Staffordshire during autumn and winter.
Other locations include Staffordshire Moorlands on 17 February and Stoke-on-Trent on 18 February.
Each resident will receive planting guidance and a QR code to mark their tree on an interactive map, helping to track where new trees are being planted across the county.
Limited free parking is available on site, including one designated disabled bay. Additional parking is available at the Cemetery chapel. The site is served by the number 30 Diamond bus and is accessible on foot or by bike.
