Engineering experts Clancy Consulting is celebrating 21 years of growth, innovation, and contribution to Birmingham’s skyline.

Since the early noughties, Clancy’s Birmingham office has grown from a small team into a regional hub of multi-disciplinary engineering specialists.

Originally based in St Paul’s Square, the company now operates from Charles House in the city’s business district.

From early days primarily supporting on blue light, public sector, and education projects, Clancy’s Birmingham office now consults on complex schemes across residential, commercial, healthcare, education, and defence sectors and has grown into a multi-disciplinary practice of nearly 30 staff.

The team’s portfolio now reflects a much broader, more complex mix that demonstrates the evolution of Birmingham and the wider West Midlands regions.

Clancy has contributed to landmark mixed-use developments and regenerative residential schemes in Birmingham city centre such as the Mailbox and Gunsmith House.

Alongside these major schemes, Clancy is known for delivering smaller, person-centric projects, including healthcare gardens and children’s homes.

Mike Powers, director of Clancy Consulting, who helped to establish the Birmingham office, said: “Birmingham has transformed itself since we first opened.

“Our success has come from evolving with the city: moving into new sectors, embracing collaboration, going above and beyond on a technical level – all to support the growth of the wider West Midlands.”

Powers notes the creation of the West Midlands Combined Authority and its renewed focus on cross-border collaboration as a huge catalyst for driving Clancy’s continued expansion across the region.

Today, the consultancy supports clients across Birmingham, Solihull, Wolverhampton, and the wider West Midlands. Clancy in Birmingham is part of a network of regional offices, so the team provides services on a national level when required.

By taking this approach, Clancy is a key player in delivering sustainable, innovative local infrastructure that helps areas to grow economically.

Mike added: “Connectivity and investment are reshaping the West Midlands.

“With HS2, major urban redevelopment and a growing tech sector, the region’s potential has never been stronger.

“As we look ahead, the combination of strong local partnerships, a pipeline of innovative projects and a commitment to investing in skilled people puts the region in a powerful position.”

Clancy’s success has been underpinned by a strong emphasis on developing people and future leaders in engineering consultancy.

A notable achievement is that every member of the company’s Board of Directors has progressed through the business. Chris Acton, Clancy’s CEO, began his career with the company as a graduate.

The Birmingham office continues this tradition by offering mentoring, professional development and graduate pathways in partnership with local universities.

Powers plays an active role in mentoring the next generation of engineering leaders through the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Chartered Management Institute.

Mike said:“As we celebrate 21 years in Birmingham, we’re not just looking back.

“We’re focused on what’s next: helping shape a smarter, greener and more connected Midlands.

“People are at the heart of this – from the specialists we employ and nurture, to the communities we impact daily. Here’s to another two decades and beyond.”
