Hidden heroes recognised at inspiring young carers day
Young carers from across Summit Learning Trust schools came together this month for a special event recognising their dedication, resilience and contribution to their families and communities.
Hosted by Ninestiles, an Academy, the event brought together over 140 young carers from across the trust’s nine schools.
The day began with a fun and sociable trip to Acocks Green Bowling Centre, where learners enjoyed time together, giving them the opportunity to relax, connect with peers and enjoy a shared experience with others who understand their responsibilities.
Following this, learners returned to Ninestiles for a celebratory gathering in the school hall.
The event included a short speech delivered by Doug Wright MBE DL from West Midlands Lieutenancy alongside Vince Green, CEO of Summit Learning Trust, recognising the important role young carers play and praising their strength and commitment.
A specially prepared video highlighting the experiences of young carers was also shared, helping to raise awareness and celebrate their voices.
Learners then enjoyed lunch together, with time for a light-hearted quiz to round off the afternoon. Visiting organisations, including Action for Children and Birmingham Young Carers, were also in attendance, offering additional support and strengthening links within the community.
As a final gesture, organisers worked to ensure that each young carer received an Easter egg to take home.
The day provided a valuable opportunity to recognise and celebrate the trust’s young carers, offering them a chance to feel supported, appreciated and connected.
The event reflects Summit Learning Trust’s ongoing commitment to supporting young carers and ensuring they are seen, valued and supported to thrive both in and out of school.
Vince Green, CEO of Summit Learning Trust said: “Our young carers are truly inspirational. Every day, they demonstrate remarkable resilience, compassion and maturity beyond their years, often balancing their education with significant responsibilities at home.
“Events like this are so important in ensuring they feel seen, valued and supported. As a trust, we are incredibly proud of each and every one of them and remain fully committed to helping them thrive both in school and in their wider lives.”
