Business leaders today called for the new leader of Birmingham City Council to deliver “clear, stable and collaborative leadership” to ensure the city’s future success.

Liberal Democrat Roger Harmer (pictured) was elected as the council’s leader on Friday evening, with his party forming a minority administration alongside the Greens and Better Birmingham Independent Group.

The Green Party’s Julien Pritchard will be the deputy leader.

The authority had been in deadlock following the 7 May local elections, with no party reaching the 51 seats needed for a majority.

In a statement Mr Harmer, the Birmingham’s first Liberal Democrat leader, said Birmingham required “leadership that is steady, pragmatic, and unwavering in its focus on the issues that matter most to residents.”

He added: “In recent years Birmingham has faced uncertainty, and real damage to its reputation.

“This coalition shows what can be achieved when we put our city above narrow party politics.”

Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce said the coalition administration must provide stable and collaborative leadership at a vital time for the city.

Henrietta Brealey, CEO of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, said: “On behalf of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, I would like to congratulate the new Leader and Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council at such a pivotal moment for our city.

“Birmingham has no shortage of ambition, ideas, or opportunity – from our vibrant business community to major regeneration and investment pipelines. What matters now is delivery.

“It is essential that this coalition provides clear, stable and collaborative leadership to restore confidence and enable the city's success.

“As the city's leading, apolitical voice of business, we look forward to working with the new leadership to accelerate progress and economic growth.”
